SuperGrafx gets an incomplete R-Type port

You thought the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 was obscure?

Think again, the two dozen or so people who has the successor to PC Engine, the mighty SuperGrafx, can now enjoy the first four(-ish) levels of R-Type on the system. RetroRGB has the story.

It's distributed as an IPS-patch available here.

TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine CoreGrafx mini announcement trailers

Of course, you could just get a Super SD System 3 and enjoy the entire PC Engine library.

E3 2019 turns out to not be a complete dud for shmup fans

Let's get this out of the way, Konami, until recently thought to have abandoned console gaming made a stunning comeback:

Contra Anniversary Collection is out now on PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox One and Steam.

And a new canonical game in the series was announced, Contra Rogue Corps:

Switch version coming September 24th this year.

On top of this they also announced a PC Engine mini (although it appears to be a 1:1 replica size-wise):
Different regions get different games but all regions get some shmups.

We already knew that Panzer Dragoon was being remade but neither platform nor date was set. Well, the platform is (initially) Nintendo Switch and it's coming this winter:

Bullet Heaven review of Battle City (Famicom)

Most of the 8-bit output is too primitive for me to enjoy (PC Engine mostly exempted) so I'll pass but you may enjoy it?

Super SD System 3

While not shmup related per se, spanish company Terraonion took the retrogaming world by storm when it launched the Neo SD MVS and AES, a flash cart for Neo Geo MVS and AES respectively, has now returned with another insane product: Super SD System 3.

Yes, by plugging a humble (about $50) PC Engine into this device you can play not only all HuCard game releases from all regions (the Turbo EverDrive from Krikzz already does this) but also lets you play any and all CD-ROM releases (and includes built-in System Cards for CD-ROM2, Super CD-ROM2 and Arcade CD-ROM games) and throws in an RGB-connector too.
At €240 this is an absolute steal compared to just getting these components separately and having the machine RGB-modded.

PC Engine turns 30, a free game to celebrate!

Aetherbyte has released a free shmup,  NANTETTATTE ENGINE starring ROM², to celebrate the fact that the PC Engine console (not even well known under its western moniker TurboGrafx-16) has turned 30.

As a shmup player you really should get a PC Engine if you don't already have one, it has a fantastic library of shooting games. Make sure to get a variant with a CD-ROM, it's worth it.

You're going to need something like the Turbo EverDrive to play the game.

Here's a shot my own gorgeous unit, complete with IFU, CD-ROM and Everdrive:
